in my Ph.D., I developed a system for Human-AI collaboration that sustains and increases engagement during a musical dialogue. Musicians were delighted to perform along with such a system, and in specific configurations, experienced it as conversing with a creative partner/colleague. Three factors contributed to a sense of rhythm partnership - sense of response, mutual influence, and negotiation of transitions together.
